PrimetimeUGC has upload the third part of Kirkfat’s Back to Basics series.

This part of Back to Basics goes over the Storyboard and how to create map transitions using Cryptic social zones and custom maps.  The video is primarily for Star Trek Online’s foundry authors so I’ve included what differences Neverwinter authors should expect in their version after the video.

There are three things in the video that will be different for the Neverwinter author:

  1. UI
  2. Map Transition
  3. Space!

UI

If you’ve been keeping up with the Neverwinter Foundry you’ll see right away that there are some UI differences.  The biggest difference is the use of lists instead of a grid when picking NPCs or objects.  The entire layout for those sections (in the map editor and when selecting NPCs) have completely changed.  However other than a few missing features the rest of the Foundry looks exactly the same,  most notably the Storyboard and Storyboard tools.

Map Transition

The map transition in Neverwinter is slightly different than Star Trek Online’s, specifically the part where Kirkfat mentions the “doors”.  In Star Trek Online when you leave a planet you enter what’s called Sector Space and from here you fly your starship to the various planets and space stations in the game.  That’s the map that appears at 6:16 of the video.  Instead what the Neverwinter Foundry does is display a map where you can place a “pin”.  This pin will become a point of interest in the game world which the player must head to in order to continue the mission.

Space??

Finally as mentioned above there is no space travel in Neverwinter!  In the video Kirkfat created a simple space map which contained a planet and a place marker, which then transitioned to Vulcan.  A Neverwinter version of this example would be a fort in the middle of the map which the player must reach.  Once the player has reached the place marker it will then transition to a map inside the fort.  The way it’s laid out in the Foundry will be exactly the same.
